Secure Hosting Services

As part of our managed service, we can host services for customers in our Smartbunker data centre.

Wholly owned by Centrinet, the facility provides server hosting and managed co-location from an ex NATO military bunker. The culmination of a three year refurbishment project, provides a unique mix of physical security and state-of-the-art hosting infrastructure that is unmatched.

Physical Characteristics

Our hosting centres are built to the highest specification and installed with the latest power, environmental and security systems. Critical systems are built with either total redundancy or at least N+1 resilience ensuring that no single point of failure exists.

Space: 30,000 square feet of data centre space is split over 3 floors.
Construction: concrete shell with 3 metre thick steel reinforced walls and 4 metre thick steel reinforced ceiling; reinforced concrete internal floors; concrete block floor to ceiling; partitions for individual suites.

Network & Connectivity

Triple-failsafe network connectivity from BT

Smartbunker's connectivity backbone incorporates the latest optical network technology from BT, which allows data to be transferred via two totally independent SDH fibre optic rings. Each ring supplies two separate fibre optic cables (each containing 96 fibres), any one of which is capable of supporting the full load of the data centre. The cables are then routed via 3 entirely separate pathways from the building to connect with BT's nationwide ‘Colossus' Core infrastructure - which now underpins all of BT's IP services - with no points of convergence outside of the facility.
IP authority: Smartbunker is a RIPE LIR (local internet registry), which enables us to act as agents to register PA (provider allocated) and PI (provider independent) IP blocks on behalf of customers.
Private circuits: MPLS, SDH, ATM. Speeds from 2Mbit/s to 1244Mbit/s.

Power

Clean and reliable power is critical to hosting operations, which is why we've invested in the latest technology to ensure 100% availability. Combining utility and backup generation, we are able to offer full N+2 resilience on all power feeds to data suites.

Utility power: dedicated, protected underground 11KV high voltage supply to our own (owned) protected sub-station plant.
Backup power: fully duplicated Cummins diesel generators, with long term fuel reserves providing run-time in excess of two weeks without refueling.
Internal distribution: 415 volt, 3-phase diversely routed and connected directly to individual UPS units serving technical loads.
Filtering: TVSS (transient voltage and surge suppression) units are deployed on 415 volt distribution side of UPS to ensure clean power.
UPS: data suites utilise APC Infrastruxure� data centre UPS with fully resilient architecture and comprehensive management features.

Environmental Control

All data hosting areas feature fully duplicated systems for 100%, or N+N resilience.

Data suites are cooled to a nominal 22 degrees Celsius +/- 1 degree.
Cooling and humidity: 100% duplicated down-flow with condensers placed in secure protected plant rooms away from hosting centres.
Monitoring: environmental probes are located in the top of racks, providing real time monitoring of temperature and humidity.

Security

Smartbunker provides a level of security unmatched by any other UK data centre. Our combination of physical security and sophisticated electronic countermeasures are reinforced by a round-the-clock security culture.

Access policy: only vetted and qualified technicians are allowed access to data hosting centres. All visitors are registered using biometric and image capture systems to provide positive identification.
Access control: a comprehensive electronic access control system exists throughout the facility, combining card and card/pin readers at strategic points and at the entrance to every data suite (there are at least 8 layers of controlled access to pass through before gaining access to data suites).
CCTV: internal and external high resolution CCTV is installed site-wide with hard disk recording and archiving capabilities.
Electronic: BS7042 (high security) Chubb security and distress system.
Perimeter: secure seven acre site is surrounded by 9 ft high MOD fencing topped with barbed wire and covered by CCTV.

Fire Protection

Fire detection: Smartbunker employs the latest fire detection and suppression technology to ensure uninterrupted operation. All data suites and adjacent plant support areas feature aspirating high sensitivity smoke detection. All other areas feature optical smoke detection linked to a central analogue addressable system.
Fire suppression: Managed data suites are equipped with zero ozone depleting FM200 gas suppression.
Construction: All shared and dedicated suites feature steel doors and concrete block partitions, which extend from floor plate to ceiling.
